Teens have been recovering from the TikTok tic by seeking help from mental health professionals and taking advantage of self-help tools.  Therapists and counselors have been providing guidance to teens that are struggling with effects of the tic, such as low self-esteem, negative body image, depression, and anxiety. The therapists often focus on helping teens build healthier relationships with technology and control their time spent on social media platforms.

In addition to therapy, teens can also benefit from self-help tools such as cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) or mindfulness practices. CBT helps people identify and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns that might be driving their compulsion for TikTok videos. Mindfulness practices involve focusing on the present moment without judgment or distraction, which can help regulate how teens interact with technology and reduce the risks associated with excessive use.

Other strategies teens can employ to recover from the TikTok tic include setting screen time limits for themselves or having a friend or family member monitor their usage. In addition, some teens find it helpful to take frequent breaks from social media, set aside specific times when they will not check their accounts at all, and create meaningful goals outside of making TikTok videos that give them a sense of purpose. Finally, it is important for teens to remember that they are not alone in their struggles; talking to supportive friends, family members, teachers, coaches or even other peers who understand what they are going through can be extremely beneficial in recovery.
